Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s and Don’ts:

  • Do make sure you know the location of where you are interviewing.
  • Do your research and know the type of job interview you will be having.
  • Do dress the part for the job and the company.
  • Do plan to arrive about 20 minutes early. Late arrival shows lack of responsibility and interest. If you happen to be running late, call and let the company know as soon as possible.
  • Do greet the front desk.  This will be your first  impression.
  • Don’t chew gum during the interview. Very unprofessional to be slapping your mouth around while talking.
  • Do bring  an extra resumes to the interview.
  • Do address the employer/interviewer by title (Ms., Mr., Dr.) and last name.
  • Do shake hands in a firm matter.
  • Do wait to be seated until offered. Don’t slouch or mess with your hands  and sit up with correct posture.
  • Do make good eye contact with your interviewer(s).
  • Do show  excitement and enthusiasm in the position of which you are applying for.
  • Don’t smoke, even if the interviewer does and offers you a cigarette. And don’t smoke beforehand so that you smell like smoke.
  • Do avoid using poor language, slang,and words such as “um”.
  • Don’t be soft-spoken. Enforce confidence in your voice.
  • Do have a high energy level, but don’t be overly aggressive.
  • Don’t act as though you would take any job or are desperate for employment.
  • Do avoid controversial topics.
  • Don’t say anything negative about former colleagues, supervisors, or employers.
  • Don’t ever lie. Answer questions truthfully
  • Do stress your achievements and accomplishments.
  • Don’t answer questions with a  “yes” or “no.” Explain whenever possible.  Give examples of your achievements.
  • Do show off the research you have done on the company and industry when responding to questions.
  • Don’t bring up or discuss personal issues or family problems.
  • Do remember that the interview is also an important time for you to evaluate the interviewer and the company she represents.
  • Don’t answer cell phone calls during the interview and make sure to turn ringer to silent.
  • Don’t inquire about salary or other benefits until you have been made an offer. Be prepared to answer questions about your salary requirements.
  • Do ask questions about the company. It shows your interest.
  • Do close the interview by telling the interviewer(s) that you want the job and will strive to get the position.
  • Do try and get business cards from each person you interviewed with.
  • Do write thank you letters within 24 hours to each person who interviewed you.
