Is a career as a Registered nurse right for me?
Registered nurses spend a lot of time on their feet. They work very long hours and sometimes around the clock several days out of the week. They may work night shifts, weekends and holidays. However, a career in this field is often very rewarding as you are able to be a part of saving lives.
As a registered nurse, you typically do the following:

  • Administer patients medicine and treatment
  • Record patients medical history and symptoms
  • Monitor patients vital signs
  • Operate medical equipment
  • Education patients and their families on medical treatment
  • Explain post hospital treatment
In 2010, registered nurses held over 2.7 million jobs, making them the largest healthcare occupation. The median annual wage in 2010 was over $64,000 with the highest 10 percent earning more than $95,000.  According the bureau of labor statistics, the job opportunities in the nursing occupation are expected to be excellent because of the high turnover rates in the field.
Education
Registered nurses must possess at least an associates degree in nursing or higher and all RNs must be licensed.
