Emergency Medical Technicians typically do the following:
- Respond to 911 calls for emergency medical assistance
- Assess condition of patient and determine course of treatment
- Follow guidelines learned from training and the physicians that oversea their work
- Use safety guidelines for transport of patients in the ambulance
- Create a patient care report documenting the medical care they received
- Check or clean equipment after use and replace used supplies
In May 2010 the median annual wage for EMTs was $30,360. The lowest 10% earned about $19,710 and the top 10% earned about $51,370. As an EMT be prepared to work overnight and on the weekends since medical emergencies can come at any time.
The job growth rate for EMTs is expected to grow by 33% from 2010 to 2020. This growth is much higher than the average for all occupations.
