Is A Career as a Cosmetologist Right For Me?

All states require cosmetologists to be licensed. To qualify for a license, a person must have the follwoing

  • a high school diploma
  • be at least 16 years old
  • graduate from a state-licensed cosmetology school
  • take a state licensing exam

The exam includes a written test and, in some cases, a practical test or an oral exam.

Full-time programs in cosmetology usually last around 9 months and may lead to an associate’s degree. Those who want to open their own business also may take courses in sales and marketing, but a degree may not be required.

The average hourly wage for a Cosmetologist is around $10.94/hour.
